  Chapter 1

Family brunch. It had become a monthly thing since Alec and Ellie had found each other, and for the most part, she loved it. Getting a chance to see everyone all in one spot was usually easier than tracking them down individually, especially since the brothers were almost always off running missions to retrieve something, or someone, for the gods.

At that moment, though, she hated family brunch. Ellie’s mouth had gone dry as the question fell from Robin’s lips. She suppressed a shudder. It was such a simple question, and yet it made her skin feel cold and clammy.

“How is the wedding planning going?” Robin had asked with hopeful eyes.

Her other favorite was, “When’s the wedding?” She didn’t know, and she wished people would just back off, except it wasn’t people in general asking the questions but her family, well, her new family, anyway.

“Oh, um, it’s fine. Lots to do. Ye ken how it is.” Ellie stabbed at her scrambled eggs with her fork in a vicious manner.

She could feel Alec’s eyes on her. There was nothing she could do to explain her reaction that wouldn’t hurt him or, at the very least, worry him. She loved him with all her heart, with every fiber of her being, so the last thing she wanted was to cause him pain. Glancing at him out of the corner of her eye, she caught the silent exchange between him and Robin. He glared, she shrugged, and the conversation moved on, or at least, it should have.

When an uncomfortable silence fell over the table, Ellie stepped in to fill the gap. “How’s the cabin?”

“Wonderful. I never thought I’d love living in the woods as much as I do.” Robin smiled up at Hal, who curled his arm around her shoulders.

Ben appeared on their side of the table. She’d noticed that he always kept as much space as possible between himself and Dem, and she was willing to bet that Aster was the cause of the tension between the two men. A siren and a fury with an oracle trapped in the middle, or at least, Aster had been until she’d settled down with Dem. Ellie smiled inwardly. When had life become so bizarre, or maybe the better question was, when had the bizarre become normal?

“Just so you know, Leonard is secured down in the Underworld. Phoebetor has my contact info for when he wants to begin working the guy over.”

“Did you pick a good room for him?” Cin asked. She unmasked the hatred toward the man who had tried to torture her sister and kill her, and it made a shiver run down Ellie’s spine.

“It’s pink, covered in unicorns and princesses, and there are kids’ movies playing on repeat twenty-four seven. Not just the classics, either. They sprang for the new stuff too. Helps make it extra annoying. I thought it was a good choice, personally.” Ben chuckled darkly.

Ellie zoned out of the conversation and focused on the food on her plate. She knew she should eat more, but Robin’s question about the wedding had killed her appetite. There was nothing she could do to get around it, unless she told Alec she didn’t want to get married, and just the thought of doing that made her heart burn with regret. He didn’t deserve that. She should just suck it up and put her feelings to the side.

Dem’s throat cleared loudly in the way someone does when trying to get everyone’s attention. Ellie looked up from her abused eggs and saw the man beaming with pride.

“We’ve got some news we would like to share. Aster had an ultrasound last week, and Vivienne thinks she knows the sex of the baby . . .” He paused dramatically.

“Spit it out!” Ellie said as she smiled at the love that radiated out of the couple sitting across from her.

  “It’s a boy.”

A cheer went up from the men, while the ladies clapped and squealed, excited for their sister. When the noise died down, Aster added, “It’s not completely certain yet . . .” But her words were lost on the brothers, who embraced each other and slapped Dem on the back. The amount of pride and joy in the room was almost unbearable.

“You getting ready?” Robin asked from across the table.

“Yeah. We’re getting there. I still can’t believe this is all happening, but I wouldn’t trade it for the world.” A beatific smile spread over Aster’s face as tears shone in her eyes.

“I love you, my amazing Sunshine,” Dem said, turning to his soulmate, his voice hoarse with emotion.

“I love you too.” Aster sighed with a joyful look on her face.

Ellie looked at Alec. They had never talked about kids, but seeing his joy for his brother, she got the distinct impression that he wouldn’t be upset if she wound up pregnant, not that she planned on letting that happen anytime soon. While the outcome might not be desired at that moment, she was perfectly willing to test the method. When the thought crossed her mind, she tried to remember the last time they’d had spontaneous, clothes-tearing, wall-shaking sex. It took more time than it should have to recall. It had bee
n over a month or two ago.

They still loved each other immensely, but something had shifted. A kind of tension had taken up residence as the pressure to plan the wedding increased. Alec had tried to help at first, but she’d get frustrated with him and they would end up sniping at each other. Now, he just left her alone about it, which was probably the last thing he should have done.

She needed him to push her, to force her to come to terms with her life, like he had when they’d first met. Admittedly, she wasn’t discovering an underlying magical ability, but her emotions about the wedding were all mixed up. Ellie knew if she spoke to Alec about it, he would think it was her emotions about him that were mixed up, and since that was exactly the opposite of what she wanted, she didn’t say anything.

“Hey, beautiful,” Alec said as he walked up, a wide grin on his face. Ellie flushed with desire, which was quickly extinguished by the thought that she hadn’t seen that expression on his face in way too long. “Ready to head home?”

“Sure.” She stood, taking his extended hand. “Can we walk or fly?”

“If you want.” He shot her a concerned look, worry pinching his eyebrows together as they exited the main house. “Everything okay?”

“Aye, it’s just this wee stomach bug I’ve been fightin’,” she said, patting his arm. “Nothin’ to worry about.”

He tried to surreptitiously glance down at her plate, which was still covered in food. She caught the look and quickly scooped up both her plate and his, putting the wasted food in the trash before turning to her soulmate.

“We should walk, then, since flying will probably only upset it even further.”

Ellie nodded as she looked over at him. His skin glowed in the late autumn sunlight, while his blue eyes glittered brighter than the sapphire on her finger, the effect of which was only enhanced by the thick crop of dark chocolatey-brown hair on his head. Everything about this man was scrumptious, so why was she digging her heels in like a mule?

  She sighed.

“Are you sure you’re okay?” Alec asked as bird calls, along with the rush of waves hitting the shore, filled the air around them.

“Aye, just tired is all.” She could tell from the way he shifted his shoulders that he wasn’t satisfied with the answer, but he didn’t push for more, either.

They walked in silence for a while, and Ellie took in the island. The place was magical, not literally, although it was magically warded from anyone the brothers didn’t want to enter their space uninvited, along with hidden from human eyes and technology. She had no idea how the animals came to be on the island, since it wasn’t close to any shore. The birds she could understand, but the squirrels, hedgehogs, chipmunks, and other small woodland animals were a mystery to her.

“I miss you.” Alec’s voice was so quiet that at first, she thought she’d imagined it, but something had startled her out of her ruminations on forest creatures.

“I’m right here.” She laughed, but as she looked up at him, the laughter died in her throat.

His blue eyes stared down at her, pain and longing pinching the corners. “No, you’re not. It’s like there’s a wall between us.”

“Alec, I’m right here. There’s no wall.” She reached up and cupped his cheek, the bristles of the stubble that covered his face scratching at the palm of her hand.

It reminded her of their first kiss, how the rasp of his stubble on her skin had produced such an instinctive response in her, that it had turned their kiss into a full-blown make-out session. It would have ended with up-against-the-wall sex, too, if they hadn’t been interrupted. The memory warmed her, igniting the flame that seemed to be so small in the recent weeks, stoking it into a fire big enough that she stood on her tiptoes and kissed him.

“I’m right here. With you. Always.” She whispered the words against his mouth between kisses.

When his hands circled around her waist and pulled her into him, the fire grew larger, coming close to an inferno. Why didn’t they have sex more often? Why did it sometimes feel like the first time all over again? As his mouth claimed hers, the roar of desire quieted the questions swimming in her head. His hands branded her where they sat on her hips, but as they moved around to cup her ass, her breath hitched.

“Home?” Alec asked, his breath ragged with a primal craving.

She nodded, and the world around them disappeared.

  Chapter 2

Alec jumped them straight to the bedroom. His mouth latched on to Ellie’s almost immediately as he pushed her back toward the bed. She had been so distant recently that it was driving him insane. He didn’t know what to do about it, whether to push the issue or to keep his distance and let her figure out in her own time whatever bothered her. None of it mattered in that moment, though, because she was there, and she was his.

His hands skimmed her soft skin under her light sweater. It was like silk under his rough fingertips. He breathed her in, and the scent of her arousal went straight to his cock, which was already throbbing against the fly of his jeans. He pulled the soft material up, exposing her breasts.

As he began kissing the tops of her voluptuous curves, she took over and pulled the sweater over her head. Her thick chestnut hair spilled over her shoulders like a waterfall as it came free from the material. When he paused and lifted his head, her bright green eyes were staring at him, sparkling with desire.

The light creamy lace of her bra strained as it fought to contain her ample breasts. He decided to relieve the poor thing and unhooked the clasps at the back. His fingers slid up her back and pushed the straps off her shoulders before gently tugging the whole thing off her body. Everything about her was beautiful. His perfect petite soulmate.

Her pink nipples stood at attention, and as his fingers circled them, the small peaks turned into hard bullets. He held her to him as he slowly lowered them both onto the bed, his mouth dipping to claim the sensitive skin of her breasts and her nipples. He laved first one, and then the other, paying close attention to the sounds that escaped her lips. Her soft cries, sighs, and the hitches in her breath all allowed him to tailor his touch to what her body needed in that moment.

Light shone in through the window, flowing across her pale skin. As he pulled away, her eyes sharpened on him. A wicked grin spread over his face as he began to peel the leggings from her body. Her creamy lace panties matched the bra he’d stripped off her earlier, and it only heightened his already painful desire. His fingers drifted down, gently rubbing the spot that ached for him, the core of this beautiful creature who was his. Alec teased her over her panties, pressing just hard enough that she could feel him, without filling the need she had for him.

When the moisture from her center began to soak through the delicate fabric, he couldn’t resist any longer. He pulled them down in a swift motion, and then his hands returned to their work. He circled the nub of pleasure that lived above her entrance, never directly touching it, but dancing around it. As her body began to writhe under his touch and her noises became more desperate, he thrust two fingers into her. She cried out, her back arching, thrusting her breasts toward the ceiling and making his cock swell to the point of pain. If he didn’t bed her soon, he wouldn’t be able to be a gentle lover when he did.

“Alec . . .” she breathed, and in that moment, he wanted her more than he wanted to breathe.

He withdrew his thumb from circling her clit and quickly licked it with his tongue, causing another cry, this one a mix of surprise and pleasure. His mouth fully descended on her then, and while his fingers thrust in and out of her, making a come-hither motion inside her, his tongue circled her little bud. He could feel her body begin to tighten around his fingers, and though he thought about teasing her and bringing her down from the edge, he didn’t think he could be that patient, so he sucked on her before going back to using his tongue, except this time, he used his thumb as well, mixing the hard and soft sensations.

Within moments, Ellie exploded, screaming as the orgasm rocked through h
er. Her hands released bolts of electricity or lightning, and the light show she put on dazzled him. The orgasm didn’t slow down, her body bucking off the bed as pulses of pleasure rocked her. The bolts of energy crackled through the room, leaving a smell of ozone behind them. He’d never seen her release so many, but then again, this had been the longest they’d gone without having sex.

“Fuck me, Alec,” she panted, even though her body still trembled and twitched from her pleasure.

He didn’t have to be told twice. His clothes were off in a matter of seconds, and his cock nudged at her entrance. Her hands came around and pulled her legs to her chest so her core was tilted toward him. Ellie’s opening was flushed with the blood that had rushed there, and her swollen lips were coated in moisture that glinted in the light. By the gods, she was the most beautiful thing he’d ever seen. In one quick thrust, he sheathed himself in her.

In that moment, he realized he’d waited too long. “Ellie, I can’t be gentle.”

“Did I ask ye to be?” A slow sexy smile spread over her face as his heart kicked with joy at having this woman in his bed, hell, in his life.

Alec began to move then, setting a fast pace as he pumped in and out of her. The sound of their flesh smacking together, combined with the gasps escaping from Ellie and his own grunts as he thrust into the wet heat of her, was a symphony to his ears.

“Wait . . .” she breathed, and he stopped, frozen, unsure what was happening. “Like this.”

She flipped over onto her stomach and raised her ass in the air, wiggling it at him ever so slightly. It was enough to put him in a trance, the two rounded globes jiggling just the right amount to set his blood on fire with need.
